Donald Trump's System of Punishment and Favor

Trump's insatiable desire for retribution has quickly morphed into a methodical system. Over the past year, the leader's fury and caprices have adopted the form of government actions in ways reminiscent to past authoritarian regimes. Federal figures who resist his demands are promptly dismissed and succeeded by supporters. Political figures who challenge him risk indictment, trial and penalties. Opponents have been categorized under administration directives as “anti-American”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with criminal charges as “extremists”.

The Justice System Restructured

Every instance involving legal action of Trump's enemies and leniency for supporters demonstrates its own distinct features. Yet, regardless of their specific form, they embody manifestations of what has arisen as a calculated technique. These incidents are anything but random. The administration's purge of federal attorneys and Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel, alongside his installation of devotees in high-level posts, began rapidly, promptly assumed a pattern, and has now been molded into a system. Federal prosecutors and the FBI have been remade into political organizations under his clear direction to execute his demands. Wrongdoing has been turned into routine. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Management is preoccupied with penalizing the chief's supposed opponents than they are with defending our national security.

Inside the System

The origin of this system has been uncovered in the legal complaint of three former high-ranking Federal Bureau agents lodged in September in the US district court in the capital against FBI director Kash Patel and attorney general Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a effort of payback against them for what administration figures deemed to be a failure to exhibit adequate political loyalty”. According to the filing that Brian Driscoll, the previous interim leader, describes a conversation in which Patel “openly acknowledged the unlawfulness of his conduct”.

He had tried to defend agency personnel from being terminated, the lawsuit claims. The director told him that “White House figures” – perceived by the official to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to dismiss anyone who they identified as having worked on a criminal investigation against Trump. The complaint continues: “Patel stated that he had to fire the individuals his superiors told him to fire, because his chance to hold his own role depended on the ouster of the personnel who were involved in investigations involving the President. Patel explained that there was no way he or the official could do to prevent these or any other firings, because ‘the bureau sought to place the leader in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” After Driscoll informed Patel he was breaking the agency's own regulations, Patel reportedly said “he understood that and he knew the nature of the swift terminations were likely unlawful”.

Extensive Impact

Following his claimed confession to the official, the Department of Justice and the law enforcement agency have been gutted and reorganized for the administration's system of punishment. Six of the bureau's senior executives were fired or compelled to leave in the first days of the presidency. About numerous lawyers at the justice department have accepted a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than seven government attorneys, including those in the New York office, quit in objection over what they viewed as partisan influence in withdrawing the corruption case against the city leader, Eric Adams, in exchange for his assistance with his federal agency detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which manages corruption cases, has been reduced to minimal staff. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its staff has departed. A third of executives at DoJ have quit. The unit enforcing environmental law has seen departures of half its management.

Favors and Sanctions

In the mayor's situation, the temporary lawyer for the southern district of New York, she, stepped down in protest against what she described as the “trade-off”. The border official, his “immigration leader,” showed up as the enforcer with the mayor on television to state: “Unless he complies, I'll be back in NYC.”. Meanwhile, another figure, earlier the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who negotiated the agreement, was granted an judicial position, a potential pathway to the judicial branch.

His protection for crimes carried out while in office, provided by the unprecedented judgment of the GOP-led on the judicial body, thus preventing his legal action over the Capitol riot and maintaining his public standing for the national vote, is the basis on which he stands to protect his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been freed to enable corruption. The impact of the court judgment permeates his administration and the political party completely. The legal case has metastasized. As Richard Nixon's legal adviser he remarked about the Watergate
