Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
