Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then located numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in association with the event," they added.

City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.

A high-ranking representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
